Yours, Mine and Ours, design in Chicago’s public space

My photographs explore the Chicago public parks, museums, and libraries that provided a sense of community and curiosity during my childhood spent visiting them. These spaces have continued to stir these feelings as an adult as I wander through their halls in search of inspiration.

I am interested in how these photographs can lead people in and out of these public spaces, through intentional framing of indoor/outdoor areas, thoughtful use of color, and the architecture that frames and thus envelops my subjects if they are present.

This project looks to highlight these spaces and interactions that are not all based on monetary transactions to ensure that we understand the immense value of keeping public spaces public and accessible to those who are too often cut off by socioeconomic and physical barriers from the activities and resources provided by those who curate these spaces. I think in such a fast-paced, individualistic world, to get the full experience of living in such a vibrant and active city community, we have to learn how to rebuild the connections to our neighborhoods and the people that live and work within them.
